From 10 July to 30 August 2026, the Vila do Conde Memory Centre presents the exhibition "200 Years of Photography | 200 Images of Vila do Conde: Memories from the Foto Adriano Collection", an initiative of the Vila do Conde Municipal Archive marking two important milestones in the history of photography: the 200th anniversary of the first known permanent photograph, created by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826, and the centenary of the death of Joaquim Adriano, Vila do Conde’s first photographer.
The exhibition brings together a selection of 200 photographs from the historic Foto Adriano collection, documenting the evolution of Vila do Conde throughout the twentieth century. Portraits, urban landscapes, economic activities, traditions, festivities and everyday moments are revealed as a valuable documentary heritage, enabling visitors to revisit the collective memory of the community and trace the transformations of the municipality across several generations.
Complementing the continuous projection of images, the exhibition also features a collection of historical objects related to photographic practice, including cameras, glass negatives and other equipment used in the former Foto Adriano studio. This section offers visitors the opportunity to discover some of the artefacts behind the photographs and to understand the development of photography as both a historical document and a tool for preserving memory.
As part of the exhibition programme, the Memory Centre is also organising the educational activity "Photography Detectives", scheduled for 14 July. Aimed at children, the initiative encourages participants to explore the history and heritage of Vila do Conde through the observation and interpretation of photographs from the Foto Adriano collection. Registration for the activity is already fully booked, reflecting the strong public interest generated by this programme.
Through this exhibition, the Vila do Conde Municipal Archive and the Vila do Conde Memory Centre invite the public to rediscover the history of the municipality through photography, highlighting a collection of exceptional historical, documentary and heritage value. Its preservation and dissemination play an important role in strengthening collective memory and local identity.
