On 26 and 27 November, Vila do Conde will host the 20th National Meeting of Municipalities with Historic Centres, dedicated to the theme “Historic Centres – Cultural Heritage and Community Life.”
Over two days, the meeting will bring together local authorities, experts, public and private institutions, researchers, students and citizens to reflect on the main challenges and opportunities associated with the preservation and enhancement of historic centres.
The programme will promote a broad discussion on the role of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage designations, at both national and international level, as instruments for recognising, protecting and enhancing collective memory and the identity of territories. The importance of rehabilitation interventions that respect the authenticity of buildings and traditional materials will also be discussed, seeking to reconcile heritage preservation with the needs and demands of contemporary life.
At a time when historic centres are undergoing profound transformations, the meeting will also reflect on strategies that can strengthen their vitality by promoting the retention of resident populations, access to housing and the regeneration of the social fabric. The sharing of good practices and public policies may help identify solutions that preserve these spaces as living, inhabited and vibrant places, where heritage and community mutually reinforce one another.
Another key topic will be the promotion of local commerce, recognised as an essential element in the sustainability of historic centres. Discussions will address commercial urban planning strategies that encourage a diversity of functions, enhance traditional and local businesses, strengthen the attractiveness of public spaces, and promote mobility and urban animation solutions that respond to the needs of both residents and visitors.
The 20th Meeting of the Portuguese Association of Municipalities with Historic Centres aims to establish itself as a privileged forum for dialogue, the sharing of experiences and the development of solutions for the future of historic centres, bringing together different perspectives around a common goal: preserving heritage, strengthening the identity of territories, and fostering more resilient, inclusive and dynamic communities.
