D. Berengária Fernandes Ferraz was the third lifelong abbess of the Convent of Santa Clara in Vila do Conde, serving from 1384 to 1406. Her appointment met with strong resistance from a significant group of nuns, who initially refused to obey her. This rebellion became associated with the legend of the “Miracle of the Dead Nuns”, which was immortalised in a canvas painting commissioned by Abbess D. Francisca dos Serafins during her three-year term (1666–1669).

Recently restored, the painting will be presented in a temporary exhibition, accompanied by a talk focusing on its central figure and on the conservation and restoration work carried out. The event will take place at the Interpretive Centre of the Santa Clara Monastery on 19 September at 5:00 pm.

This activity is part of the celebrations of the European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission.
