In November 2025, Galeria Julio and the Julio / Saúl Dias Studies Center celebrate ten years of activity, marking a decade devoted to the preservation, study, and dissemination of the work of Julio / Saúl Dias—one of the most singular figures of 20th-century Portuguese art and poetry—and the cultural dynamization of Vila do Conde.
To commemorate this first decade, Galeria Julio prepared a program extending from November to late January 2026, combining artistic creation, critical reflection, and new publications.
The celebrations began on November 2, coinciding with the 123rd anniversary of Julio / Saúl Dias’ birth, with the premiere of the performance “à flor da pele”, produced by the Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora Company, supported by the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth, and Sport / Directorate-General for the Arts and the Vila do Conde City Council.
The program continues with the inauguration on November 15 of the exhibition “Julio and Modernism in Portugal”, curated by Bernardo Pinto de Almeida, offering a critical review of the history of Portuguese modern art. The exhibition brings together works from ten leading national institutions, including the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Arpad Szenes / Vieira da Silva Foundation, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art – Chiado, among others.
During the exhibition period, a commemorative serigraphy of Julio will be launched in partnership with the Portuguese Center for Serigraphy, alongside a new line of art-inspired merchandise reflecting the universe of the Vila do Conde artist and poet.
Ten Years of Art, Memory, and Continuity
The 10-year celebrations are not merely a retrospective but a reaffirmation of the vitality of a project that continues to grow, question, and inspire. Between the past that stimulates and the future that reinvents itself, Galeria Julio honors the work and spirit of Julio / Saúl Dias, making art a space for discovery and dialogue, renewing its commitment to artistic creation, critical reflection, and cultural education, while preserving Julio / Saúl Dias’ idea that art is above all a form of poetic resistance.
Founded in 2015 by the Vila do Conde City Council, following the legacy established by the artist’s son José Alberto Reis Pereira, Galeria Julio has established itself as a space where memory and contemporaneity meet. It hosts exhibitions, reflection cycles, artist residencies, and educational programs connecting artistic creation to the community. Ten years later, the gallery confirms the relevance of a project that, building on the legacy of Julio / Saúl Dias, has created its own place in the Portuguese cultural landscape.
