The Vila do Conde Museum, through its museum site Alfândega Régia – Naval Shipbuilding Museum, is taking part in the 6th edition of CineMar – Portuguese Cinema and the Sea: Films, Conversations and Workshops (Portugal/United States).

With the sea at its heart, this year’s programme invites audiences to reflect on the many ways in which people relate to the ocean, while also exploring the sea and water as spaces of inspiration, imagination, unease, memory and questioning.

The initiative is organised by the Educational Department of Break The Anchor Cooperative, a non-profit organisation (Portugal/USA), in partnership with the PNC – National Cinema Plan.

The documentary explores the transition of the Azores’ whaling communities towards new activities connected to the sea, highlighting the adaptation of former whalers and the preservation of their traditional knowledge.

Through testimonies and memories passed down from one generation to the next, the film reveals the influence of whaling on tuna fishing, shipbuilding, coastal surveillance and whale watching. The film therefore contributes to preserving and celebrating the maritime cultural heritage and identity of the Azores.
