48th National Handicrafts Fair Pays Tribute to Portugal's UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage

The 48th National Handicrafts Fair (FNA) pays tribute to the elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity inscribed by UNESCO in Portugal, bringing together, from 25 July to 9 August, in the Jardins da Avenida Júlio Graça, in Vila do Conde, the practices, knowledge and cultural expressions that constitute one of the most important living legacies of Portuguese identity.

Organised by the Association for the Protection of Handicrafts and Heritage of Vila do Conde (ADAPVC), in partnership with the Municipality of Vila do Conde, the National Handicrafts Fair is recognised as the oldest, largest and most prestigious event dedicated to traditional Portuguese handicrafts. Over sixteen days, around 200 artisans from all regions of the country will showcase the very best of Portugal's traditional arts and crafts in an event where authenticity, creativity and the transmission of knowledge between generations remain at the heart of the programme.

Under the theme of safeguarding living heritage, the Fair's thematic pavilion will be dedicated to the Portuguese cultural expressions inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists, featuring exhibitions, multimedia resources and information on traditions that continue to be passed down from generation to generation, preserving ancestral knowledge and reinforcing the country's cultural diversity.

The theme of the 48th National Handicrafts Fair is also closely linked to the strategy for promoting the cultural heritage of the municipality of Vila do Conde and to the preparation of future UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage nominations for the Vila do Conde Bobbin Lace, Traditional Wooden Shipbuilding and the Vila do Conde Flower Carpets, an intention that has already been publicly announced by the Municipality.

Faithful to its mission of preserving, promoting and disseminating traditional Portuguese handicrafts, the Fair once again brings together master artisans and new generations of creators, offering visitors the opportunity to engage directly with dozens of traditional crafts, watch live demonstrations and discover the richness and diversity of Portugal's artisanal heritage.

The programme also includes an exhibition of the finalist works of the 4th Young Artisan Competition – Crédito Agrícola Award, an initiative that recognises the creativity and innovation of younger generations of artisans and encourages the continuity of traditional crafts.

One of the most emblematic moments of the Fair takes place on the second Sunday of the event: the Bobbin Lace Maker's Day, during which dozens of lacemakers work live throughout the venue, demonstrating the mastery involved in creating the iconic Vila do Conde Bobbin Lace, one of the municipality's strongest symbols of identity.

But the National Handicrafts Fair is also a great celebration of Portuguese popular culture. Throughout the sixteen days of the event, traditional music groups, folk dance ensembles and other representative groups from different regions of the country provide daily entertainment, while the renowned Gastronomic Days invite visitors to discover Portugal through its flavours, bringing together regional specialities and traditional recipes that make gastronomy an equally important expression of cultural identity.

Handicrafts, heritage, music and gastronomy come together in an atmosphere of celebration and authenticity that makes the National Handicrafts Fair much more than an exhibition: it is a true encounter with the soul, memory and ancestral traditions of Portugal.
