April 18 marks the 184th anniversary of the birth of Antero de Quental, a date that the Centro de Estudos Anterianos commemorates with two initiatives: a conference and an exhibition dedicated to one of the most remarkable Portuguese intellectuals and a key figure in poetry, philosophical and literary essays, and journalism, as well as in the struggles for freedom of thought and social justice.
“Antero de Quental – a global author” is the title of the conference delivered by Ana Catarina Mesquita, a PhD holder, university lecturer, and researcher in Global Studies, specializing in education, culture, and society. Her work focuses on contemporary transformations, particularly the impact of globalization, education, and cultural dynamics on today’s society. The conference offers a reflection on the international dimension of Antero de Quental’s thought, as well as his influences and legacy within a broader cultural and intellectual context, rediscovering the relevance and universal reach of his work.
“Portraits of Antero” is the exhibition presented alongside the conference, a small documentary showcase featuring a collection of representations of Antero de Quental created by some of the most important Portuguese painters, illustrators, and sculptors.
The conference will take place at the Casa Antero de Quental on Saturday, April 18, at 4:00 p.m., while the exhibition will be open to visitors until September 17.
